Water extinguishers are very effective when extinguishing Class A fires. It works by removing the heat from the fire. There are two methods of using a water or Class A fire extinguisher. You can carry it or if you feel it’s too heavy for you, you can place it on the ground and operate it as normal. Water extinguishers have a range of about 4-5 meters and will discharge in 60-70 seconds depending on the size and shape of the nozzle.
Water extinguishers must not be used on or near any live electrical equipment. Because there is a significant risk of electrocution to the user. Using this type of extinguisher on a Class B fire, one that involves flammable liquids like paraffin, petrol or oil will help spread the fire. Compared to other extinguishers water fire extinguishers have limited use and are becoming less common. But still, water extinguishers are the best one out there for Class A fires. Especially where the burning material is lightweight.
